Delhi Police to reflect city's racial makeup

Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has asked the police chiefs of the eight North-Eastern States asking them to send aspiring recruits from their region to be inducted into the Capital’s force. The move is part of a Union Home Ministry plan to equip the Delhi Police to deal better with the continuing hate crimes against people from these eight States.

The induction of the North-Eastern youths into Delhi Police will make it better equipped to deal with the crime against people from these States. Such outstation recruitment would be a special provision relating to Delhi and the North-East, for no mechanism now exists for sending would-be police recruits from one State to join the force of another.

Sources told The Pioneer that the Delhi Police have again written to police chiefs of all the eight North-East States — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura — and asked them to enhance the process recruiting their aspiring youths. In January this year, Bassi had written to them asking them to send aspiring recruits from their region to be inducted into the Capital’s force. The move was part of a Union Home Ministry plan to equip the Delhi Police by recruiting 160 youths, 20 from each State, every year.

According to the Government’s decision, 20 personnel, 10 women and 10 men, will be inducted into the Delhi Police on post of constable, every year. As of now, only 39 personnel of North-Eastern origin are employed on various posts in Delhi Police. Of them, 10 are IPS officers on deputation. The rest, mostly constables, are migrants who were already settled in Delhi when they were recruited.

Some 85,000 people from the North-East live in Delhi and its neighbourhood. More than 5,000 boys and girls from the region come to the Capital for studies and training every year, and many North-Eastern women work in the private sector, including BPOs, here. The community has faced repeated racial attacks and insults and its women have been subjected to sexual assault.
