Delhi in-charge Ahmed to meet Cong leaders today

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and in-charge of Delhi Congress affairs Shakeel Ahmed will meet party MPs, MlAs, councillors, delegates, block and district presidents on Thursday at Congress headquarters Rajiv Bhavan.

This will be his first meeting with Delhi Congress leaders after his appointment as in-charge of Delhi affairs. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her Cabinet Ministers are expected to be present too.

Ahmed’s main task will be to ensure better coordination between Delhi Congress chief Jai Prakash Agarwal and Dikshit. Despite Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s intervention, both leaders have failed to bury the hatchet.

Political analysts say Ahmed will help the Congress as he has a good reputation among Poorvanchali Muslims in the Capital.

Sources in Delhi Congress claimed that this would be the first meeting of Ahmed with Delhi's MPs, MlAs and other office bearers and he may discuss political strategy to enthuse party workers in view of the forthcoming elections in November this year. “Several Delhi Congress leaders have not met Ahmed after his appointment. Pradesh office will introduce all its delegates, block and district presidents to him,” sources said.

Appointment of Ahmed, ahead of upcoming polls, is very significant. “This is a masterstroke ahead of the Assembly elections as there are 18 per cent Muslim voters in Delhi. Besides, Ahmed also enjoys good relations with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit,” said a Congress leader.
