Delhi’s Transport Minister, Kailash Gahlot on Thursday said that the Delhi Government will provide a subsidy of Rs 5,500 each for first 10,000 buyers of e-cycles in the city and the first 1,000 buyers of e- cycles will also be given an additional subsidy of Rs 2,000.

The Government will also provide a purchase incentive of 33 per cent of the MRP up to Rs 15,000 per vehicle to the first 5,000 e-cargo cycle buyers to support the food delivery and e-commerce drivers in the city.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to inform people and wrote “Congrats Delhi! Today we are taking one more important step in the fight against pollution. Delhi Govt's hugely successful e-vehicle subsidy policy is being enhanced with a subsidy for electric bicycles today. E-cycles will help Delhiites reduce the use of polluting vehicles.” Addressing a press conference, Gahlot said that subsidies on e-cycle will be eligible for one per individual and the person needs to be a resident of Delhi with a valid Aadhar card.

“An e-cycle can travel up to 45 km on a single charge,” said Gahlot adding that a total of Rs 59.44 crore subsidy has been given so far by the Delhi Government.

“Nearly 46,000 Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been sold till date under the Delhi EV policy and the city has also achieved the Highest EV sale contribution of 12.6 per cent in March this year. The halfway mark of Delhi’s vision of 25 per cent EV by 2024 has been achieved,” said Gahlot.

Jasmine Shah, the Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission (DDCD) vice-chairperson said that with this decision of the Delhi Government, the national Capital will become the first State to promote e-cycles.

“Currently, only a very small section of people are using it but now we are bringing it to mainstream, especially for the people associated with the delivery segment. This will have a huge advantage in their employment opportunities. The class associated with food delivery will no longer have to buy expensive two wheelers but will be able to do their work by traveling 40-50 kms by e-cycle only,” said Shah.
