In order to fulfil the dream of a student coming from economically weaker sections (EWS), a Delhi family has decided to sponsor the education of a Dalit student Vijay Kumar who qualified the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and entered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) with the help of Delhi Government's Jai Bheem free coahing scheme.
The Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said a family from Defence Colony has come forward to help the 16-year-old Vijay Kumar in completing his study by bearing the total cost of his education. Kumar's father is a tailor and mother a homemaker.
After hearing about Vijay's case and story, Varun Gandhi and his family decided to fund his education at IIT-Delhi. ""Instead of donating money to a temple, making a talented kid realise his dream of IIT is a much bigger service to God," said Gandhi, and his mother adding their family has always valued education and celebrated excellence.
Introducing the South Delhi-based family, Vijay Kumar and his parents to the media, Kejriwal said, "Everyone has read the story and achievement of Vijay Kumar on newspaper and on the Television. He had availed the Delhi government's 'Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana' which is a free coaching scheme for aspiring students like him, who dream big but do not have resources," said Kejriwal, himself an IIT graduate.
Besides, witnessing the success of its 'Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana', the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government had earlier decided to extend the scheme to the other category students from general category and other backward classes. Thirty-five underprivileged students, who got free coaching under the scheme, had cracked the JEE Main and NEET examination this year. Five of them secured admissions to leading technical and medical institutions such as Lady Hardinge College, IIT-Delhi, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology Delhi and Banaras Hindu University.
