In yet another incident of a speeding car going amok on city roads, a rashly-driven Chevrolet Cruze ran over three-wheeler scooter rickshaws (TSR), killing the driver and a pedestrian. The car was being driven by one Ankit (25) while radio jockey identified as Shefali (23) was in the front bucket seat. The incident took place in Samaipur Badli area of Outer Delhi around 5.15 am on Sunday. Apparently the driver of the car lost control behind the wheel and hit pedestrians trying to cross the road. Three others are admitted to a city hospital and are under medical observation.

A police official of Outer district said that Ankit and Shefali were returning to Delhi from neighbouring Murthal in Haryana when the crash took place. It appears that the car was moving at breakneck speed and Ankit lost control of the car near Badli bus stop. The car was being driven around 100 km per hour when it hit a parked TSR. The impact was so severe that the TSR turned turtle. The car careened to hit pedestrians crossing the road, an official added.

The head-on collision resulted in the death of the auto driver identified as Surinder (48) and one of the pedestrians, later identified as Satish. Three other pedestrians — Ravi Kumar, Mahesh and Yashpal — are still recuperating in the hospital. Their condition is stated to be critical. The police said that the pedestrians were

among the 12 people, who came from Rajasthan to appear in the physical fitness test for the CISF. While one of them died on the spot, others have been admitted for treatment at AIIMS Trauma Centre. Their next of kin have been informed,” a police official added.

The accused car driver Ankit, who works at a factory in Faridabad and Shefali were found to be under the influence of alcohol and the subsequent medical test proved it. A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered at Samailpur Badli police station and investigation is underway.

The Investigating Officer (IO) has recorded statements of eyewitnesses in the case. The car involved in the accident has been impounded. The accused were arrested on under Sections 279/304A of IPC. The police will also record the statement of the three injured persons once they pull through, a police official added.
