DDU's patients nurse a grudge

Medical services at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital in West Delhi were hit as its nursing staff went on strike after a staff, Bacchu Khan, was arrested by police for allegedly molesting a woman IPS officer on Thursday. His colleagues had entered into a scuffle with police and were also arrested. Agitated, the entire nursing staff went struck work.

The accused have been identified as Bacchu Khan, Ajit Yadav and Sheesh Pal. The incident took place on Thursday when the woman officer had gone to the hospital to visit a patient. Investigators revealed the main accused Khan not only whistled at the officer but molested her and misbehaved with her when she was making enquiries. An argument surfaced and the officer was roughed up. The other nursing staff members also joined in and manhandled the other policemen who intervened. Following this, a case was registered at Hari Nagar police station for molestation and outraging the modesty of a woman. Khan was administered medical care as he had accused the police officials of beating him up. As soon as he was discharged, he was arrested. The nursing staff members were agitated soon after the arrest was made and left patients to fend for themselves.

“Police have drawn up their own conclusion but what we came across was an entirely different picture,”said DDU’s Medical Superintendent, Dr Bharat Singh. He said this was not a matter related to the hospital and that the administration was not responsible. However, Singh denied reports of a strike. “The staff has not gone on strike. The president of the Union said patient care would not be compromised upon.”
