The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will seek clarification from National Green Tribunal (NGT) as the agency has decided to defer demolition programmes till after winter season. “In view of the unfortunate incident during the demolition drive carried out by another agency at another location and keeping in view the winter season, DDA has decided to postpone the demolition programmes,” stated a Press release.
However, it said Yamuna clearance programmes were fixed in pursuance to the orders of National Green Tribunal (NGT) as no agriculture activity or any other construction is permitted in the Yamuna Flood Zone (YFZ).
“It is pertinent to mention here that the land falling under four villages, namely Chiragh Zanubhi, Bela, Inderpat and Chiragh Somali was temporarily leased for five years for grass cutting and grazing to the two societies, namely the Delhi Peasant’s Multipurpose Co-operative Society and Jheel Khurenja Milk Producer’s Society. The leases expired in 1966 and the societies were asked to hand over the vacant peaceful possession of the land to DDA,” said a senior official of DDA.
Official further added that the lessees were in unauthorised possession of the land and were carrying out agricultural activity in breach of terms and conditions of lease. Therefore, eviction proceedings under PP Act were initiated and orders of eviction were passed, after following due process of law. The demolition/eviction programmes were carried out after the court upheld the eviction orders wherever appeals were filed by the occupants.
“About 106 acres of land was cleared on the demolition programmes carried out on 26-27 November, December 1 and December 9 2015,” said official.
