Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) revealed on Tuesday that they have rescued a 25-year-old woman from her parent’s house on Sunday, after they received a complaint that her parents locked her up and beat her for allegedly marrying a man from another religion.

“A complaint was received in the Commission where a boy had informed that he was in love with a girl from other religion. They got married in April 2018 in an Arya Samaj Mandir. He informed that their parents were not aware about their marriage. When the parents of the girl learnt about their marriage and they kept her captive in their home,” revealed DCW spokesperson.

In a joint effort with Ghazipur police station, a team from the commission and police staff went to rescue the girl and found that she had been sent to Ghaziabad at their relative’s house.

The police reportedly called her family members to the police station where her family members tried to beat the boy.

“Meanwhile, many people had gathered outside the police station and created a ruckus as the girl and boy belonged to different religions,” the commission revealed.

DCW spokesperson said that on intervention of police, the girl was brought from Ghaziabad where she expressed her desire to live with her husband. She refused to take any legal action against her family.

“The couple is planning to get married properly now under the Special Marriages Act. DCW Member Kiran Negi has written to Delhi Police to provide the couple security,” the spokesperson revealed.

DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “I feel sorry for the parents who put the lives of their children at risk.

I appeal to all to not to take law in their hands and inform us at 181 if anything illegal is observed.”
