DCW rescues 13-yr-old girl from being married off to 25 years old

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Monday claimed to have rescued a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly being forced to get married to a 25-year-old man in Delhi's Palam village.

On receiving a complaint on their helpline, senior counselors from the Commission were immediately deported to visit the child.

They revealed that the child was dressed up as a bride and was being taken to Uttar Pradesh to be married.

The team from DCW reportedly called the Delhi Police and informed them on the situation. Subsequently, police team and DCW counsellors stopped the wedding preparations.

"It was learned that the victim belonged to a poor family while her mother was a domestic help and her father was a daily wage labourer," DCW spokesperson said.

While counselling the victim, DCW counselors learned that the supposed groom's brother who is 35 years old had previously sexually abused the child and wanted to have the 13-year-old girl marry her brother.

The girl was then sent to Child Welfare Committee and has been placed at a shelter home.

The Commission revealed that they will try and rehabilitate her.

"The Commission has taken strong notice of that fact that the FIR has not yet

been registered by Police in the matter.

In this regard, the Commission has issued a notice to Delhi Police for registering the FIR immediately," DCW spokesperson stated in the official release.

"It's a matter of great shame that in today's India, little girls are being married off in the Capital. I thank the person who informed the Commission about the matter and also appeal to all to keep their ears and eyes open. In case anyone sees any abuse with a woman or girl, please call at 181 and inform us" DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said.
