Few days after the Supreme Court reprimanded lieutenant Governor  (l-G) Anil Baijal over disposal of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), he has assured of  effective and efficient waste management strategies. In an official statement from Raj Niwas, l-G, said that corporations are taking steps to manage Delhi's three sanitary landfill sites with scientific approach.

According to an official of the Raj Niwas, various projects for all three municipal corporations have been panned and will be completed by August 2020. These projects are focusing on processing garbage and enhancing the capacity of waste to energy plants.

To process municipal solid waste generated daily in South Delhi area,  an additional capacity of 25 Mega Watt  Waste To Energy (WTE) plant at Tehkhand to process 2500 TPD waste is being set up. The plant will be operational by December 2019.

For the municipal solid waste generated daily in North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC), additional capacity of 15 MW (WTE)plant at Tehkhand to process 1500 TPD waste is being set up.

The plant will become operational by August 2020 whereas decentralized composting and bio methanation Plants for processing of 500 MT of MSW will start by September 2018. However EDMC will enhance the capacity of Gazipur WTE .

According to lG house statement a decentralized compositing and Bio methanation plants for processing of 245 Metric Tons will also be operationalized in different phased starting from September 2018 and will end in April 2019.

l-G in a statement also ensured that all above projects will be completed in two years time by August 2020.  After completion of these three projects, it is expected that no untreated garbage will be dumped at the landfill sites.

It is important to mention here that a Scientific Advisory Committee comprising of high level experts from the premier institutes of the country such as IITs, CSIR and TERI in Sept 2017 was constituted by the Department of Science and Technology, GOI on the advice of the lG.

“As a result of his (l-G) 27 review meetings with all stakeholders and 8 site visits since January 2017, the MCDs chalked out detailed plans and took steps to manage the 34 million metric tonnes of garbage in the form of legacy mounds and for closure of the sanitary landfill sites,” the Raj Niwas official said.

At present, Capital has three garbage dumping sites - Okhla, Ghazipur and Bhalswa and treats 5,100 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. Incidentally, the huge garbage mountains in Delhi have raised risk of epidemic diseases particularly in monsoon area and the Supreme Court also asked lG to respond on his action to tackle garbage issue.
