Day 2: Colleges fill up seats at the double

Day 2: Colleges fill up seats at the double

The Delhi University admissions gained pace on the second day as the number of admissions doubled as compared to Tuesday. A number of colleges — including the ones that announced high cut-offs — saw more students getting admissions on Wednesday.

Sri Ram College of Commerce was flooded with Economics Honours aspirants while Kamla Nehru College for English Honours. Even colleges with lower cut-offs like SGTB Khalsa College filled up 90 per cent of seats for BCom (Honours) and English.

There was a significantly large crowd at North Campus in the early hours of admissions. However, nearing noon, SRCC saw a massive crowd. This was mainly because students who were not selected in the St Stephen’s College truncated list were coming to SRCC. “We were only waiting for the Stephen’s list to come. Once my son got waitlisted, we came right over to SRCC and admitted him,” said Pankaj Bhatia, a local, whose son got 97.80 per cent in class XII.

This led to an overflow of admissions to Economics Honours at the college. For 123 seats in the course at SRCC, 129 students had already applied by Wednesday evening. This means that the college wouldn’t need to take out another list for the course. For BCom Honours, however, 418 students had admitted themselves for 501 seats, leaving a few seats available for more. If these seats don’t get filled on Thursday, there will be a lower cut-off released for the same.

Students gathered in large numbers at Kirori Mal College on Wednesday. From 388 admissions on day one, they shot up to 800 admissions on day two for the 1,400 seats the college has. Thus, by the second list, the college should see a full house unless there are withdrawals.

Miranda House also saw a rise in number of admissions, primarily in Political Science. The total number of students admitted rose from 180 to 430 for the 1000 seats in the college. The principal Dr Pratibha Jolly said, “Political Science seems to be the flavor of the season as maximum students have admitted themselves for that course.”

Ramjas College saw a good response as well with 670 out of 1300 seats getting filled by day two. Hindu College also doubled its admission from 250 on Tuesday to 518 on Wednesday. The college is now two thirds filled as it has a total of 729 seats.

South Campus saw a good response too. In Kamla Nehru College a large number of applicants have taken admission in English and Psychology. There were 80 applicants admitted for English which has 46 seats, again overflowing like SRCC. Only one seat is vacant with a whole day of admissions to go in the college. However, the college is expected to come out with a second cut-off list in Sanskrit, Mathematics, BCom Programme and BA Programme.
