Dacoit who axes man to death killed with same hatchet

Two persons were killed in North-East Delhi’s Sonia Vihar area on Friday. A 28-year-old man was axed to death when a dacoit barged into his house in the early hours, while the dacoit was also killed in a scuffle later when the victim’s brother, along with other relatives, confronted him. The deceased has been identified as the house owner’s younger brother Chittaranjan, while the dacoit is still unidentified.

The incident took place in the two-storey house of a jeweller Shivjee, who used the ground floor as his shop. Around 3 am, the accused climbed up though the sewer pipe and entered the first floor of the house — where Chittaranjan was sleeping —  apparently with an intention to rob the shop. The accused was carrying a torch, an iron rod, an iron cutter and a sharp-edged axe.

“Prima facie it seems the accused first attacked Chittaranjan with the axe. He then came down and started breaking the locks of the jewellery shop. On hearing the commotion, Shivjee, his brother Devender and brother-in-law Rajkumar, who were sleeping on the ground floor woke up and caught hold of the accused. They too were attacked by the intruder with the same axe but still managed to overpower him using his own iron rod and axe,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Beniwal.

A member of the house informed the PCR but by the time police reached the spot, the intruder was dead. Both the bodies have been sent for an autopsy, while a case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered against the dacoit at Sonia Vihar police station.  The modus operandi of the accused indicated the involvement of a Bangladeshi gang. The presence of his companions outside the house also cannot be ruled out, said a senior official.
