Interrogation and subsequent investigations into IPl spot-fixing have led the Delhi Police to two key underworld operatives - 'Master' and 'Doctor Saab'. These two D-Company operatives are believed to be operating from the Gulf countries and Pakistan.
Investigators said the two names have also figured in call intercepts of the accused. They are, however, yet to find out the real faces behind the names.
"We are trying to identify these two names that have emerged during intercepts. Master and Doctor Saab are related to the underworld and based abroad," said a police officer.
The Delhi Police has interrogated Ramesh Vyas, a mastermind bookie with well-established links not only in India but abroad as well. "Vyas was in touch with the bookies, including the ones arrested. However, he did not have direct contact with any of the arrested players," the policeman added.
Vyas is the man controlling and running the betting and fixing racket in India, especially in south and west India. He also operates for people abroad.
The bookie was arrested by the Mumbai Police on May 12 on charges of running an organised betting racket with 92 mobile phones in his possession, of which a few had Pakistani numbers too. He had made several calls to Dubai and Pakistan from his illegal telephone exchange. In 2005 too, the Mumbai Crime Branch had busted his illegal phone exchange and arrested him.
They had recovered a conferencing machine, power supply unit, phone, internet terminal box, Net-to-phone devices and account books. However, Vyas was released on bail in a few months and again made a comeback in betting. Meanwhile, the police have also identified seven absconding bookies who were in touch with Rajasthan Royals' co-owner Raj Kundra and are nowhere to be found since.
