Fraud bank officials, fake call centres, online cheats operating from remote areas like Giridh, Deoghar, Bengabad, Jamtara and Ahilyapur all in Jharkhand have duped a large number of Gurugram residents this year.

Cyber crime cases have seen a steep rise in the Cyber City with the number in first ten months surpassing what was registered in the entire year in 2016.  The Gurugram police said most complaints were related with Online Banking, Credit card, Debit card fraud and cheating through mobile and other under the Information Technology (IT) act.

From 1,343 cases in 2016 related to banking, such cases rose to 1,647 till October 2017. Also, the Gurugram cyber crime team has registered around 2,758 total complaints related to ATM fraud, Facebook related, cyber bullying, fraud/cheating through the internet, miscellaneous complaints, threat by phone calls, online banking fraud within the period of ten months this year so far. While in the previous year the figure was 2,402 of such complaints.

This year the Millennium City has witnessed increment of cyber crimes. As compared to the previous year the cases of Facebook, cyber bullying and cyber stalking were 151 this year till October the figures have raised to 243.

The police usually registers a case under the IT Act only after the complaint is investigated by the Cyber Crime Cell. This year the number of online fraud has shocked the city as cases just keep increasing with victims lodging written complaints with the police.

In most of these cases, the fraudsters had called up the victims and cheated them after fraudulently obtaining their account details or their debit or credit card details on the pretext of blocking of their accounts or renewing their cards.

When the victims reveal their account details, money is transferred from their accounts. The victims come to know about being conned after getting SMS alerts on their phones from their banks.

"The only way to avoid such fraud among the people is awareness. They should not reveal their bank details to anyone because no banks asked any account holder details on phone," said Inspector, Anand Kumar Yadav, Incharge of Cyber Crime Cell.

The cyber crime team claimed that they have busted several gangs who were related to online fraud and matrimonial fraud as well. Three to four gang members were Nigerian nationals who were usually involved in matrimonial frauds.

Apart from this, February 2017, the cyber crime team had busted Gurugram-based Ponzi scam with the arrest of four fraudsters, who allegedly duped 4000 thousand of their clients of at least Rs. 8 crores.

Meanwhile, the State Government has also sanctioned the setting of  Cyber Crime police station in Gurugram.

Commissioner of Gurugram police, Sandeep Khirwar said  that the new police station will be operational soon within next 6o days. "The setting up of the police station will definitely decrease the figure of pending cases and a dedicated team will  be batter posted provide complainants faster relief," Khirwar, said.
