CVS witnesses chaos over cancellations

The Delhi University’s second cut-off list for admissions brings relief to some, but disappointment to many others waiting to take admissions as promised by authorities earlier.

Students flocked to colleges to grab the seats in disciplines of their choice. However, many aspirants were of the opinion that although the second list was more realistic than the prior one, it still gave option just for the courses, but the gate to favourite colleges did not open. As a result, the students flocked on Monday to file cancellation forms to shift into different courses of other colleges which reduced the cut-offs.

A chaotic situation prevailed at the College of Vocational Studies (CVS), where dejected students and parents demanded the college authorities to grant admissions on Monday as promised by the college earlier. The situation turned tense after which police was called in by the college to control any untoward incident. However, the Principal Inder Jeet Dagar refused those admissions, saying that the last day of admissions under first cut-off list got over on Saturday.

After denial of admission, agitated parents and students complained against the Principal to the Deputy Dean Students Welfare South Campus and also to the police. However, the college said that the written assurance was given by an official who was not competent to do so.

“We have already over admitted students in English course. Most of the students who are complaining came really late on days of admission. There was so much confusion on Saturday and some college official gave them written assurance, but that person is not even competent to do so,” said Dagra.

On the other hand, the withdrawals were seen post the second list. At the Sri Ram College of Commerce, seven students have withdrawn from Commerce honours and shifted to the Economics honours, making the total number in the discipline 69. At Kirori Mal College, 138 have cancelled, Ramjas has seen 76 cancellations, Ram lal Anand College has had 35 cancellations, at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College seven  students and Shivaji College has had 10 students withdrawing from various courses.

Tuheena Raj, who has 96 per cent, had grabbed a seat in a college of South Campus in Economics, but said that her aim was to get in one of the colleges at the North Campus.

“I was waiting to meet the cut-offs of Economics at some college of the North Campus and quickly held a seat at Ramjas after the second list, but not in the prefered course. I am going to pursue BCom here, but my first priority was Economics which has been capped with high cut-offs in most of the leading colleges,” she said.
