Investigations into the alleged custodial death of a 24-year-old fruit seller inside the Adarsh Nagar Police station on December 28 has revealed that apart from the involvement of the Station House Officer (SHO) in the delay in identification of Sompal's abandoned body found at Majlis Park Metro station, there were other police personnel too. Sub-Inspector Umesh Rana and Constable Kuldeep, part of the team, which reached the spot when Sompal's body was found, allegedly staged a drama for over 48 hours and pretended not to identify Sompal.
In another twist to the custodial death of Som Pal, the two policemen, SI Umesh Rana and Constable Kuldeep allegedly disclosed to the senior police officers that they could have averted the probe if they had removed the Rojnamcha (diary entry maintained by the police personnel at each police station about the details of suspects of a criminal case).
According to a police officer, privy to the investigation, at the behest of the of Adarsh Nagar, SI Umesh Rana and Constable Kuldeep attended to the call made by the PCR staff to the police station. Then, the two policemen not only took the body to the nearby hospital mortuary, the duo also informed their SHO about the body and kept the SHO updated. Over a period spanning 48 hours, the duo pretended not to identify Sompal.
The case reached the senior police officers of the Northwest District and the police officers at the Police Headquarters only when the SHO was called in for questioning.
