Till now, DND flyway had fallen through the cracks. But the management has finally stirred to the issue of cracks on road surface. After reports of Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) found cracks not conducive to high speed driving, the toll operator will ramp up repairs from Monday onwards. The move may affect vehicular movement on the entire 7.5 km carriageway but the concessionaire has claimed to carry on repair work without disrupting traffic.
The toll operator has divided the entire stretch into five segments of 1.5 km each. Around 250-metre length of two lanes will be resurfaced everyday and the entire work is likely to be finished by the year-end. The overlay work will be carried during non-peak traffic hours.
The toll management has put up informatory signage and deputed two dozen additional marshalls to guide commuters during repairs. Regular updates will also be provided via public address system at the toll plaza.
“We had conducted research with CRRI, a Delhi-based institute, earlier this year and found that the recent condition of DND flyway was not meeting international standards of road safety. Since DND is a key road of Delhi-NCR, the need of the hour is to maintain standards. With the re-carpeting of DND flyway, maintenance cost will be zero in future,” said Anwar Abbasi, spokesperson, DND toll plaza.
“We have completed the basic work before its overlay. Work of laying fiberglass is left to be done. This time, we are not going to divert traffic on opposite lanes, movement of vehicles will continue on other two lanes,” said Abbasi.
The flyway, with four lanes from each side, is a 7.5 km stretch between Maharani Bagh and Noida. It is the key route between Greater Noida and the Capital as over 1 lakh vehicles cruise on it daily. This is the first time since its construction in 2001 that DND management has decided to close the flyway for repairs.
