The increased number of cyber cases under Information Technology Act has forced the Delhi Police to set up a dedicated cyber cell, which was inaugurated by Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi on Monday. At least, 226 cases were registered last year, which is double the number from four years ago, as only 99 cases were registered in 2011. In 2012, 84 cases were filed, while 150 were probed in 2013.
Speaking on this occasion, Bassi directed his force to make effective use of the existing facilities and further make it a state of the art centre for Cyber Crime investigation. This cyber cell will function from the Old PS Kotwali building, Daryaganj, New Delhi. The establishment of the cyber cell in Crime Branch will further augment the capacity of the Delhi Police in detection of cyber crimes.
“The cyber crime cases have witnessed a quantum jump over the past few years. These complaints are being received by hand as well as through post and e-mails and are generally related to social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube,” said Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Among other complaints handled are those of fake e-mail IDs, hacking of websites and e-mail accounts, credit card frauds, internet banking frauds, abusive, defamatory or threatening e-mails and Nigerian 419 scam.
