In the wake of the increasing fatal incidents caused due to open drains, with the recent death of a man who was drowned into a deep drain at Mayur Vihar Phase-3, East Delhi MP Mahesh Girri took up the issue with the lieutenant Governer and Chief Secretary of Delhi to cover up open drains in the city. The meeting took place on Thursday and called for immediate action to put a halt on the accidents that take place due to such negligence.

Considering this as a serious issue, BJP’s National Secretary and East Delhi Member of Parliament said the Public Works Department (PWD) should cover all the drains and Delhi Jal Board need to reorganise all the sewers. He held the PWD officials and the Delhi Government responsible for any loss of life.

According to Girri, “PWD is not taking it’s work and accountability seriously. These kind of incidents are happening virtually on a daily basis.”

Girri added no heed is being paid to the cleaning of drains, especially in monsoon season. The drains which are either open or have broken slabs that pose a serious threat in the city and have staked many lives.
