A Delhi court on Thursday sent Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president (JNUSU) Kanhaiya Kumar to one day police custody. Kanhaiya — currently lodged in Tihar jail on the sedition charge — will be taken to an undisclosed location for interrogation, along with Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.
Earlier, the court dismissed the Delhi Police’s application of collecting voice samples of JNU students Umar and Anirban - accused of sedition and who were arrested after they had surrendered on February 23.
Umar and Anirban were sent to three-day police remand on Wednesday night at the South Campus Police Station near JNU which was turned into a makeshift court room following an order of the Delhi High Court to “maintain confidentiality” during their remand proceedings.
Police had demanded seven-day custody of the duo, accused of organising a controversial event at JNU on February 9 where anti-India slogans were raised and Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hailed.
Police on Wednesday also applied for production of Kanhaiya so that all the three students can be interrogated together.
The Delhi High Court had on Wednesday ordered maintenance of “confidentiality” during the remand proceedings of Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban and directed police to ensure that no one “suffers even a scratch” in wake of the Patiala House court violence on February 15 and 17.
