Unable to conceive a child, a 28-year-old woman, along with her 30-year-old husband, committed suicide at their residence in Southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri area on Sunday morning.
Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) said, “The incident was reported at around 10.50 am when Arpita Bagga was found lying on the floor of her drawing room with ligature marks on her neck while her husband Mohit was found hanging from the ceiling fan. Their bodies have been kept in the mortuary of AIIMS as their families are yet to come to Delhi.”
Police suspect that the couple had been married for more than 2 years and in the absence of a child, the couple could have taken such a extreme step. A senior police officer said, “The person who made the PCR call stated that ‘my son is attempting suicide.’ Immediately, a PCR team reached at spot where Nitin, Mohit’s close aide was found trying to break open the door. The door was forcibly opened.”
“Mohit was found hanging with a cloth from a ceiling fan. In the same room, Arpita Bagga was lying unconscious on bed. She had ligature mark on her neck,” added Biswal.
Nitin, close aide of couple said, “Mohit and Arpita got married two years back. We had no idea about both of them going through some kind of issue or problems. They never shared anything with us.”
Police said that since the couple was married for less than seven years, for the immediate proceedings Sub District Magistrate and Tehsildar were informed to conduct proceedings under section176 CrPc.
Adding further, Nitin said that Mohit was quite reserved and introvert kind of person. “The couple had no kids. They never shared anything about it either.” A senior police officer said that during preliminary investigation, they found that Arpita Bagga had allegedly texted her mother in morning about couple committing suicide. “Instantly, Arpita’s mother informed Mohit’s father about it and he made the PCR call. Mohit’s father informed Nitin about the same as he resides nearby.”
However, Arpita did not mention the reason of committing suicide but the family members, requesting anonymity stated that couple was going through financial crisis from some time. Mohit’s neighbour said, “From last few months, Mohit was unemployed and he even asked my husband about some references in another companies. Arpita never shared or spoke to me about their financial crisis. She usually stayed in her house while comparatively Mohit was more interactive.” Police said that they have not been able to find anything about Mohit’s profession.
