Cops keep a tight rein on Holi hellraisers

Enforcement and planning by the Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) to check the revellers during Holi celebrations led to less number of fatalities on city roads. Yet another self-congratulatory pat on the back. According to statistics compiled by the Traffic Police, only six persons were killed in five fatal road accidents in the city on the day of Holi, the lowest since 2007, even as the Delhi Traffic Police prosecuted over 13,000 revellers for traffic violations, including 1,447 for drunken driving.

Traffic Police has taken several steps to streamline traffic and also keep a tab on those driving in a drunken stupor.” The presence of policemen at strategic locations and strict traffic enforcement resulted in the lowest fatal accidents in the city on the day of Holi till now,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.

“Around 200 special teams of Traffic Police officials were stationed at different locations in the city to take action against drunken driving, overspeeding, riding without helmet, performing stunts on two-wheelers and other traffic offences,” said Shukla. Joint checking against drunken driving was undertaken by Delhi Traffic Police, PCR and local police of respective police stations.
