In another move to keep their officers fit amidst the highly demanding schedule of work, the Delhi Police is going to open a fitness centre at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) at ITO. The gym will be equipped with high-tech machines, exercise bars, treadmill, punching bags with a pair of boxing gloves, ab-crunch machine, chair squat, leg extension and leg press and dumbbell to help senior officers posted at the PHQ.

The idea of opening the fitness centre is the brainchild of Police Commissioner BS Bassi, who set the ball rolling. Work has already been started on the eighth floor of the 13-storey building and within two weeks it will be opened for the officers.

“The gym will be looked after by a fitness coach from a unit of the Delhi Police. It will be open from 9 am to 8 pm, said a police officer adding, the closing time may exceed as many officer sit and work till late evening in their offices.

According to the plan, initially it will be opened for the IPS and DANIPS officers but soon inspectors too can avail the facility of the fitness centre. With this, they could work out in the PHQ only and move to their home just after their work. They can do some exercise in the morning also, an official added.

A store room in the office of Special Commissioner of Police (intelligence) located at the eighth floor of the building has been allotted for the gym. Besides, another room, where the police’s RTI cell is located is being shifted to another floor.

An officer said that former Police Commissioner YS Dadwal had also initiated this concept during his tenure in 2008. A gym was constructed at the conference hall on third floor of the building but later it got defunct and the equipment was distributed to other units of the Delhi Police. Before Dadwal, a gym was opened during the tenure of Nikhil Kumar.
