In order to curb bikers’ menace especially during nights, New Delhi district police has launched an intensive drive to tame the rowdies. 40 check points have been marked for the special drive where bikers tend to come from other areas of the city for performing dangerous stunts over weekends.

In the last three days, police have arrested five rogue bikers including two for indulging in molestation and 315 bikers have also been prosecuted.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi district), S B S Tyagi said, “We have launched a late-night crackdown on errant bike riders performing risky stunts at 40 check points of New Delhi district area and fined 96 bikers and impounded 20 motorcycles,” he added.

He said that in the third day of the drive, a total of 715 vehicles were checked in a joint effort by New Delhi police and traffic police during which more than 40 check points have been set up at India Gate, Mandir Marg, Connaught Place, Shankar Road, Maan Singh Raod, Mandir Marg, Rajghat, Rafi Marg and other important junctions in New Delhi. The drive is carried out from 11 pm to 5 am.

“On Saturday, we had fined 139 bikers, impounded 23 motorcycles and registered cases against three motorcyclists. In all, we had checked 2258 two-wheelers in the last two days. On Saturday, which was the second day of the drive, 584 motorcycles were checked, out of which 84 were fined and eight were impounded,” Tyagi said.

Tyagi said that the drive is aimed at stopping youngsters from performing dangerous motorcycle stunts as they are life threatening. “Parents should not give vehicles to the under-aged, even grown ups should drive their vehicles responsibly,” he added.

There have been a number of incidents in the past in and around India Gate where stunt junkies have either lost their lives or injured others. Even a police constable was seriously injured in a similar incident recently.

On Friday late night, police had arrested two bikers, who were harassing two women on a scooter across Janpath and Motilal Nehru Road, during their drive.
