Undaunted by the defeat in the just concluded general elections, Delhi Pradesh Congress has started the process to contest Delhi Assembly elections due in February 2020. Delhi Congress president Sheila Dikshit has said party workers will approach people with a positive agenda to win their trust back.

Addressing a meeting of the party workers on Tuesday, she said that the party workers need not to get disheartened by the setbacks in the Lok Sabha elections. Citing example of the Congress defeat in 1977, Dikshit said that the Congress party fought back to wrest power under the dynamic leadership of Indira Gandhi and the party remained in power for several years thereafter.

She also appealed to Congress president Rahul Gandhi to withdraw his resignation.

Senior party leaders also emphasised that they were firmly with Rahul Gandhi in difficult time.

The Congress president thanked the people for reposing their faith in the party. She said that the Congress candidates finished second in five of the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi, and it also came first in five Assembly segments and second in 42 Assembly constituencies.

The Congress secured 22.5 per cent of votes in Lok Sabha polls and finished second in five of the seven seats in Delhi.

Dikshit, who was Chief Minister of Delhi for 15 years, said that the development works in Delhi have come to a grinding halt in the past five years under the AAP Government in Delhi and the BJP Government at the Centre. “The Congress Government had initiated many development works to make Delhi a world class city which was applauded everywhere,” she said, adding that the condition of the city has deteriorated so pathetically that a clean and green Delhi left behind by the us has now become a huge garbage dump under the AAP Government.

She said that the party will bounce back with renewed vigour in the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi.
