Sibal demands probe into detention of Jamia Nagar youths
The detention and subsequent release of two youths by Delhi Police in South-East Delhi prompted the Congress to play its minority card ahead of the lok Sabha polls. Senior Congress leader and Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday accused that an ‘insecure’ atmosphere for minority youths was being created and demanded a probe into the role of Delhi Police officials and affixing responsibility. He alleged that the security agencies were implicating these youths as terror suspects without any valid ground.
“There are reports that the two youths were picked up by the police from their homes. Prima facie, it appears that the police officers have acted in haste. Role of the concerned police officials should be investigated and responsibility should be fixed,” Sibal said.
“The way police detained these children, create fear and insecurity among the minority youths. If any wrongdoing is found on part of the police officers, I will go to the courts to ensure justice to the innocent youths,” Sibal said. His remarks assume significance in the wake of a recent directive by the Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to the all State police to exercise ‘caution’ while arresting or questioning minority youths in terror-related cases. “It takes 8-9 years of trial for the accused to go free. Even if their names surface in a terror related case, it is a blot on life,” he added.
The Congress leader also led an attack on the BJP and said the party’s slogan of Modi ki sarkaar was unconstitutional as India cannot be run by an individual. The law Minister also took a swipe at the party over its internal differences over distribution of tickets for lok Sabha polls. Sibal, who is seeking re-election to the lok Sabha as the Congress candidate from Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi, said he was raising these questions as a citizen of India and not as a Congress leader.
