Cong-AAP alliance under consideration, says Rahul

Published on:

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday that the issue of extending support to Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is right now “under consideration”.

His remarks came at a time when Delhi lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has started efforts to break the impasse on Government-formation after the Assembly polls threw up a hung verdict.

“It is under consideration”, Gandhi told reporters when asked if the Congress will back AAP to form Government

in Delhi.

Earlier in order to take stock of the party’s defeat in the recently concluded Assembly election in Delhi, the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi met eight MlAs who have managed to save their seats despite all odds.

Gandhi wanted to get first hand information from the winning candidates to know the causes behind debacle.

During the meeting, AICC general secretary and in-charge of Delhi affairs Shakeel Ahmed and AICC Secretary Kuljit Singh Nagra were also present.

Sources said that the Congress vice president wanted to know how AAP has managed to win a large number of seats and the reasons for their victory in Delhi.

According to sources, Congress MlAs stated that AAP has made false promises to voters which are neither practical nor applicable.

They also suggested that if BJP refuses to stake claim to form the Government, the party should be allowed to give AAP unconditional support so that common man doesn’t have to bear the burden of another election. They stated that AAP should be allowed to form the Government so that they should know how the system functions. AAP have rejected Congress’s proposal several times.

According to sources, Gandhi also asked about what the party should do. Gandhi further suggested that they should revamp the party and bring more young and energetic people in the organisation.

Congress MlAs have earlier met AICC general secretary and in charge of Delhi affairs, Shakeel Ahmed and suggested that Congress should come forward for unconditional support to AAP if BJP fails to form the Government.

A Congress MlA said on the condition of anonymity that the meeting with Rahul Gandhi was preliminary and introductory meeting.

Rahul will be meeting the defeated candidates in batches after December 22 to understand reasons behind the debacle which saw the party’s tally coming down from 43 to mere eight. He has also sought a report from all candidates.
