Delhi Congress has planned to take to the streets in protest against the power and water shortage in the national Capital. The party workers under leadership of party working presidents Haroon Yusuf, Rajesh Lilothia and Devender Yadav will demonstrate in all the 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi on June 18.
Hitting out at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Delhi Government, Haroon Yusuf said that the AAP Government has not taken any serious steps to address these issues and the government has failed to address these problems in the Capital.
“All the Residents welfare associations of Delhi, who were a part of Bhagidari scheme during the congress regime and those who were not will also be invited to join in the Congress demonstrations in all the 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi,” said Haroon Yusuf, DPCC working president. He further said not only there is shortage of water but also the water being supplied is unfit for the consumption.
Earlier, a Delhi Congress delegation led by Delhi Congress president Sheila Dikshit called on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday and demanded six-month waiver to power consumers in the city, saying that the customers have already been paid over Rs 7,401 crore as increased fixed charges and surcharge for pension fund. Dikshit asked Kejriwal to immediately roll back the fixed charges and pension funds, being illegally collected from the power consumers.
However, the AAP accused the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and the Congress to hide their failures by raising irrelevant issues to divert people’s attention. Delhi Power minister Satyendra Jain said that the current rates of electricity in Delhi are “cheaper” than what consumers used to pay during the former Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit regime. Comparing the prices of electricity during Dikshit’s tenure, Power Minister on Wednesday said that in 2010, during the Congress Government, for a 1 kW meter reading 50 units, the bill generated was of Rs 153. “In 2013, this escalated to Rs 264. Within three years, bills went up by 73 per cent during Sheila Dikshit’s tenure. Today, for the same consumption, Delhi pays only Rs 128 which is approximately half of the bill in 2013,” he said
Similarly, for a consumption of 100 units, the bill in 2013 would amount to Rs 485, but today consumers have to pay just Rs 211. Consumers in Delhi pay about half under the AAP Government compare to what they had to pay during Congress rule,” he added.
