The collection agent of Gautam Gambhir’s father was allegedly robbed off Rs43 lakh, including Rs6 lakh cash and Rs37 lakh draft cheques, by two unidentified men on motorcycle, while he was coming back to the office in the main Gandhi Nagar Market area of East Delhi on Sunday evening, police said. Police said the agent was thrashed as well by the assailants.

According to a senior police official of the East district, CCTV footage from nearby shops are being checked to establish the identity of the accused.

The victim identified as Shyam Dev Tiwari was returning on foot after collecting payments at 5.40 pm when the incident happened. The incident reportedly happened right behind the Gandhi Nagar police station, said a police officer.

Gautam Gambhir’s father Deepak Gambhir runs a textile shop named Yogesh Trading in Gandhi Nagar.

According to the investigating officer in the case, Tiwari told the cops that two men on motorcycle approached him while he was going back to his office.

“The duo tried to forcefully snatch the bag full of cash. When Tiwari resisted, they got down and thrashed him. After which the accused fled the spot,”

Tiwari informed his employer immediately who in turn informed the police. “Prima facie, we are probing at the role of an insider. We are looking at all the angles to solve the case at the earliest,” said another police official.

“A case under relevant sections of robbery has been registered at the Gandhi Nagar police station against unknown persons. Investigation is underway,” said the senior officer.
