While the Government is making piecemeal efforts to recycle and reuse waste water, a small colony in South-West Delhi's Vasant Kunj area has taken the lead in reducing its dependency on fresh water.
Eighteen flat owners of C-9 Pocket of Vasant Kunj have decided to recycle waste water from kitchens. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday inaugurated the project in Vasant Kunj. Through this recycling, 18 households of the area would be able to reuse of 6,000 litres of water per day which may be used for horticulture purposes.
Two years ago, it initiated a pilot project for B-11 Pocket investing Rs 35,000. The project was started for recycling of waste water from kitchens of seven households in Vasant Kunj. A total of 2,000 litres of water was being recycled and that is enough for watering about 4,000 sq m of the Jogger's Park. The second project was started at Mandakini Enclave, Greater Kailash at a cost of Rs 1.10 lakh. The third project at C-9 Pocket Vasant Kunj is being supported by Delhi Parks and Garden Society. In the third project, the Government has made an investment of Rs 2 lakh.
It is an effort to keep colony parks green without using up fresh groundwater. Dikshit said the step is welcome as it would go a long way in using recycled water for horticulture purposes and would also help in recharging groundwater. Delhi Assembly speaker Dr Yoganand Shastri was also present there.
