Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday inaugurated the national Capital’s first large-scale biogas plant at Nangli Dairy, calling it a “proud moment” and emphasising that the city needs several such facilities to process cattle dung and municipal waste.
The Nangli Dairy has approximately 13,000 cattle and the Kakrola Dairy has 7,000 cattle, each producing approximately 10 kilograms of dung per day. The 200-tonne-per-day (TPD) capacity plant, spread over 2.72 acres. The biogas/CNG produced from this biogas plant will be supplied to IGL through pipelines.
The plant will produce approximately 14,000 cubic meters of raw biogas (CNG) per day and 5.6 tons of compressed biogas (purified) per day. Manure will also be generated as a byproduct.
The chief minister said the Nangli Biogas Plant will produce compressed natural gas and fertiliser using cow dung and waste from nearby dairy farms, which flows into the Yamuna through existing drains, thus curbing pollution.
The chief minister added, “The Nangli Biogas Plant will not only keep the area clean but will also provide the people of the surrounding villages with money for their gau-dhan (cow dung waste). This project will prove to be a milestone in cleaning Mother Yamuna.”
The relevant agency will collect dung waste from dairy owners at a rate of 65 paise per kilogram.
The remaining biogas slurry will be used as a natural fertiliser, which helps increase soil fertility. Work on setting up the plant began in December 2018 by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The project was awarded to M/s CEID for design, construction, finance, operation, and transfer.
Attacking the previous AAP government, she alleged that the project was delayed for years despite funds being sanctioned in 2018.
“It took eight years to complete this project because the previous government kept blaming Modi ji instead of working. They indulged in politics over everything. Only when the central government and the triple-engine government pushed together, this project finally moved forward,” she said.
The Chief Minister added that the plant was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “dream project” of promoting green energy.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood Ashish Sood explained that waste from dairies has become a challenge to people’s health. But today, with the inauguration of this biogas plant, we can say that ‘waste is not a burden, but an asset,’ the Minister stated.
He stated that “this biogas plant strengthens the Prime Minister’s green energy campaign and is an important step towards making Delhi a clean, self-reliant, and green capital.”.
On this occasion, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar commended the efforts of the Government of India, the Delhi Government, and the concerned agency for the timely implementation of the Nangli Biogas Plant.
