Class XII student killed in celebratory firing

A 12th class student was severely injured during a celebratory firing in a marriage at outer Delhi's Mangolpuri area on Saturday night.

The injured student was identified as Anjali, a resident of the area.

"The incident took place around 11pm on Saturday night during the marriage procession that started from Kala village of the area," said a senior police officer. "While the groom was about to ride the horse, one of the relatives of his opened three rounds of fire," added the officer.

Though Anjali was not part of the marriage procession, she was standing at her balcony to witness the procession. "Prima facie it appears to be a case of negligence on the part of the host family and we are trying to identify the accused," said the police officer. "We will also investigate if the pistol was legal and about the profile of its owner however, it will take some time."

Anjali was allegedly hit by a bullet in her stomach following which she fell unconscious on the floor. Initially the groom family and relatives did not realise that one of the bullets had hit Anjali but when Anjali's family member noticed her lying in the pool of blood, they intervened.

The procession was stopped and one of the family members of Anjali made a PCR call. "Anjali was rushed to Sri Balaji hospital located in Paschim Vihar area where doctors declared her condition very critical," said police.  Apparently, there was a scuffle between the two parties during the incident that later was pacified on the arrival of a police team.

Meanwhile family members of Anjali demanded compensation from the groom's family where a family member said, "Their celebration mood has ruined our happiness…Anjali is fighting for her life at hospital and here they are trying to suppress the incident."

According to police officials, a case under Arms Act and negligent hurt were registered in Mangolpuri police station and further investigation is underway.
