Criticising the move to declare all wards of North Delhi Municipal Corporation open defecation free, leader of Opposition Rakesh Kumar in NMC said the announcement was far from the reality. Addressing the house, he highlighted a range of issues that need to tackle immediately, including building toilet, developing a waste to enegy plant at Bhalswa landfill site and providing meal at Rs 10 in slums and JJ colonies.
Kumar said due to shortage of toilet blocks, people are still compelled to defecate in open. Speaking on the issue of managing and disposing garbage in an efficient way, he said that corporation needs to develop at least 14 landfill sites whereas it has only two and it has exhausted ten years ago.
Suggesting ways to boost up revenue of the Corporation, Kumar said, "Illegal construction should be regularised so that they don't face threat of sealing. "With the move, the civic body can also earn revenue.
Further, registration charges for banquet hall and farm house should be increased significantly to bring them under tax net," he said.
Kumar also demanded that a town vending committee should be constituted at the earliest so that hawkers, wheel carts and vendors can be registered and regulated.
