Civic body hikes surface parking fee by 300% in Hauz Khas

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has announced a three-time jump in existing parking rate for the surface level parking lot of South Delhi’s Hauz Khas multilevel parking, in a bid to ease traffic congestion at the already choked Hauz Khas area.

According to the officials, the parking rate has been raised from Rs  30 to Rs  100.

The surface parking lot can accommodate nearly 200 cars at once and tends to witness chaos as majority of people prefer surface parking to underground parking which has a capacity to accommodate 350 cars.

“The Corporation charges Rs  20 per hour for underground parking and Rs  30 per hour for surface parking. People usually park vehicles at surface and avoid underground which can accommodate more vehicles. To encourage use of underground parking lot, we have decided to hike rate of surface parking lot and have kept the rate of underground parking lot unchanged,” said Radhe Shyam Sharma, Chairman of Standing Committee.

Moreover, SDMC also announced to regularise its 68 parking lots by awarding tender to a single company aiming to provide hassle-free parking facilities. The civic agency said that the move is likely to add Rs  50 crore in its revenue per year and is expected to facilitate parking users in the SDMC area. “Presently we get a little amount from these parking spaces as parking mafia has almost captured these places. Once we will hand over parking lots to a single company, it will not only pay a handsome amount to the Corporation but will also provide relief to the citizens,” said Sharma.
