As the city air continues showing downward trend, the municipal corporations in the national Capital have stepped up efforts to contain pollution.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) deployed 401 water tankers with an aim to settle down the dust. South Corporation flagged off 150 tankers on Friday while North and East Corporation deployed 192 and 59 respectively. Taking strict action against violators, the north civic body also issued 42 challan in last two days following NGT direction and imposed fine of Rs 83,0000 for related violations.

A senior SDMC official said that it deployed its entire fleet of 40 water tankers and hired another 110 to mitigate the effect of air pollution. He also said that a detailed programme of sprinkling has been chalked out that would be implemented in future.

The official said that the SDMC has been continuously issuing challans for ongoing construction activities despite its suspension; carrying uncovered construction and demolition waste and burning of leaves/garbage which is a main contributor of severe air pollution, he said.

He said that all the four zones of SDMC during last two days have issued 1582 challans for violations and action was taken as per norms and NGT direction. “A total of 695 challans have been issued in South Zone followed by 459 in Central Zone, 269 in Najafgarh Zone and 159 challans in West Zone,” he said.

Further, 302 challans were issued for violation of NGT rules regarding construction and air pollution in all four zones while 320 challans issued against burning of leaves/garbage. He also informed that 24 challan were issued for throwing refuse into drains and 87 challans issued under Solid Waste Management bylaws.

The officials have also been directed to issue challan to trucks carrying uncovered Construction and demolition waste. Repeated violators will face criminal prosecution in view of affecting health of the fragile senior citizens and kids as they are more prone to pollution borne diseases,” he said.

“The Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioners to focus on containing dust and air pollution particularly in Punjabi Bagh and Dwarka localities where the dust pollution noticed above dangerous mark”, the official said.
