City received scanty rainfall, deficit hovers at 21per cent

National Capital has received scanty rainfall in the first four months of this year. As per the rainfall data of Indian Metrological Department (IMD), Delhi’s recorded rainfall is at deficient stage.

Environment scientists have raised alarm as the unusual rise in temperature has led to health hazards while also disturbing the available natural water resources. Considering the database of IMD, this year, total deficiency in rainfall from March to May 15 has been recorded at 21 per cent.

“Drastic changes have been measured in local weather this year. There is no rainfall in February, March , April and May month, and it is due to global climate change. The over industrialisation in city is also contributing to local climate change and the nearby States also comes under the loop of global warming effects,” said a scientist at Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).

According to the Weather wunderground.com website the average maximum temperature of May2015 oscillated between 38 degree Celsius and 40 degree Celsius. However this month, the maximum temperature has broken the record of past 22 years.

“In 1994, the maximum temperature was recorded at 45 degree Celsius on May 27,” said a MeT official while narrating the weather history of the city.

The weather history of past months in this year has shown major fluctuations in maximum temperature. In March month, the usual maximum temperature was recorded between 38 degree Celsius and 40 degree Celsius whereas in the year 2015, it oscillated between 35 degree Celsius and 38 degree Celsius.

Similarly in April, the maximum temperature oscillated between 32 degree Celsius and 38 degree Celsius in 2015. Whereas this year , the mercury had recoded ten notches above normal temperature with 43 degree maximum temperature. In May month of 2015, the fluctuations in maximum temperature was recorded at 31 degree Celsius to 45 degree Celsius. While this year, the maximum temperature was oscillated between 36 degree Celsius and 43.2 degree Celsius.

Importantly, above 18 days of this month , maximum temperature was recorded above 42 degree Celsius. Moreover , the Palam observatory (IMD) and other weather measuring agencies instance - Skymet, Accuweather (Goggle)  had recoded maximum temperature at 46.2 degree Celsius.

“The excessive heat due to unusual maximum temperature causes serious health issues. Headache, nausea, weakness, dizziness and fainting are the signs of heat stroke,” said a physician.
