More than 500 birds — including one peacock — were reportedly injured in the past two days due to Chinese manjha in the national Capital. According to Jain Bird hospital’s manager Sunil Kumar, over 500 incidents of bird injuries were reported to the hospital in the past two days due to Chinese manjha commonly used in kite flying. Most of the injured birds are pigeon and sparrow. One peacock also injured due to manjha which brought to the hospital on Tuesday.

On August 15, the Jain Charitable Birds’ Hospital in the walled city area has recorded over 500 birds falling prey of Chinese thread. Sunil Kumar Jain, manager of Jain Charitable Birds Hospital said, "This is for the first time that we have one Peacock injured due to Chinese manjha. More than 80 pigeons, seven eagles, vultures and about 12 crows have got injured among other small birds," said Kumar.

With peacock being the national bird of the country which is losing its habitat in Delhi due to urbanisation, Kumar is of the view that Government should take stringent action to stop sale of Chinese manjha in the city. "Peacock has critically injured in its wings while other birds have got wounded it in neck, legs and wings too. Our doctors are providing medical aid to the birds."

Environments say that since as birds population is taking a decreasing each year, there will imbalance the eco-system. "Apart, from this rapid urbanisation, cutting of tree, diminishing and unsafe nesting sites are the main reasons due to which birds are dying. Also, blistering heat in summer months and lack of shade and water add to the misery of these birds," Kumar said.

He said people residing in the area get these birds for the medical care. These injured birds fall down at people’s balcony, terrace and cars. "Responsible citizens get these birds to us while many of them throw these birds to the road side," he added.  After rescuing the birds and giving them medical aid, authorities at the birds hospital fly them in open sky and cage those birds which cannot fly.

last year  due to god’s grace rain saved lives of many birds, as this year the trend is very high, said Kumar adding that more injured birds are likely to be brought here as per the increment of kite flying by the people in the city.
