'Charged up' BJP puts the power into electricity

With just four days to go for the Delhi Assembly elections and its Vision Document still awaited, the BJP on Sunday promised Delhiites to provide 24-hour electricity, reducing power tariffs by bringing in competition among discoms and expediting CAG audit.

listing out the Centre’s decisions toward improving the power situation in the Capital, BJP leader and Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said projects worth Rs7,791 crore are already underway for comprehensive upgradation of power systems, especially on the transmission network in the city.

In an attempt to woo Delhi as it goes to polls on February 7, he said that the BJP Government will rid Delhi of generators. “This summer, Delhi will get 7,400 megawatt power. We will have smart electricity meters,” he said, adding that the party would also bring in more distribution companies to reduce rates of electricity.

“In the coming days, through privatisation of electricity, companies will emerge that will provide power supply. Consumers can decide which company their want to subscribe to and which not,” Goyal maintained.

The BJP leader attacked AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal for fooling people. He said it was Prime Minister Modi who started the campaign to save electricity. “Now people will use lED bulbs that save energy. Through lED bulbs, Delhi will benefit Rs2,000 crore”, he said.

last year when Delhi sizzled under the sweltering heat, a storm damaged transmission lines. Many parts of Delhi faced long power cuts. To this, Goyal said, “During that time, the Power Department said it would take six months for the problem to be resolved. But PM Modi put his foot down and said that the people of Delhi must not suffer. Hence, we hastened the work and fixed everything within two to three weeks,” he said.

After almost a year’s uncertainty, Delhi will vote for its Government on February 7 and votes will be counted three days later.
