Students, who didn’t get admission to their preferred courses in Delhi University, may now get a chance to change courses as colleges are likely to open applications for internal transfers if any seats are left vacant even after admissions under the 10th cut-off list. While no college has officially announced this provision, sources in the university said it is the only way colleges can fill up seats if students vacate them for BTech courses in Indraprastha University.
Every year, DU loses a fair amount of students from Science courses because of the availability of BTech courses in the Indraprastha University. Students, who get admission in BTech courses, leave BSc Honours degrees at DU and migrate. However, last year DU managed to retain most of that crowd because of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) which offered BTech.
“This year with the three-year semester system back students will again leave the university to take admission at IP University. This will result in several seats remaining vacant. So if there are courses where there has been over-admission, colleges may give students in those courses a chance to shift to the courses with vacant seats. However, it will be based on eligibility criterions as well,” said a senior professor at a college in North Campus.
According to officials in the university, if colleges do this, it will be a golden opportunity for students who missed a course by just point marks. “There are several cases where students compromise the course to get into a particular college. This compromise takes place mostly by students who miss cut-offs marginally for their desired course. Thus, for those students such internal transfers are very beneficial,” said a university official.
While the new academic session of the university began on July 21, admissions were still on under the 10th cut-off list till Saturday. However, after the 10th list, another list is not expected. Thus, colleges would now have to individually decide on whether internal transfers will be required or not.
