The Delhi Police on Sunday detained AAP's MLA Raghav Chadha and nine others on Sunday when they were on their way to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah's residence for a protest.
According to a police official, Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha, Kirari MLA Rituraj Jha and Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar were also detained by police.
Police said that they were detained at Rajender Nagar police station and were released after a short span of time. “Police had earlier received a letter from them to seek permission for a protest. But the permission was denied by police in view of DDMA guidelines on COVID-19,” said a senior police official.
However, AAP MLA Atishi and Raghav Chadha on Sunday slammed the BJP and Delhi Police for illegally detaining the AAP MLAs and councilors. Atishi said that on the instruction of the Home Minister and LG Delhi Police detained the AAP MLAs and councilors.
Adding to her statement, Chadha said that MCD’s level of corruption is clear as day, and can be gauged from the fact the BJP itself admits and replace all their councillors every election, making way for another round of BJP councillors to make money. He said that Delhi Police illegally detained me and the other three MLAs who wanted to protest outside the residence of Home Minister quoting rule 144 and pandemic act. But at the same time they allowed BJP mayors to protest outside CM residence; such wrong utilization of laws must stop, he said, adding that the AAP will continue their protest against this MCD scam of Rs 2,500 from the Parliament to the streets and we demand an immediate CBI probe on the matter.
Earlier in a letter to Chadha, police had said that they deny permission for the protest in view of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) guidelines that state that all social, academic, sports, entertainment, cultural, religious and political functions or other gatherings are prohibited up to December 31 throughout Delhi to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
"Moreover, promulgation of Section 144 CrPC is already in force in the area of New Delhi district,” stated the letter.
