The fate of previous Delhi Government’s ambitious Signature Bridge hangs in balance as it is no longer in the priority list of the new Government at the Centre. After a meeting with Union Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, New Delhi MP Meenakshi lekhi said the Government plans to construct a bridge over the Yamuna and two new barrages in the area where construction of the Signature Bridge is underway.
She, however, said the Government ‘would not touch’ the ongoing project even as it remains far from completion despite cost escalation by manifold.“In the meeting, it has been decided that two additional barrages will be constructed in northeast Delhi. These barrages will conserve the Yamuna water to meet the requirement of Delhi,” lekhi said adding there is no infrastructure in Delhi to store water.“There is no need for fashionable projects right now. Instead our focus is solving the water problems in Delhi,” she added.
