nWith ever deteriorating air playing havoc with the health of the people living in the national Capital, the Centre and Delhi Government have submitted affidavits in the Supreme Court recommending to link vehicle insurance with Pollution Under Check (PUC) certificates. Once integrated, this will directly impact the pockets of violators as they would have to cough up money to pay the fine.
Sources in Delhi government told The Pioneer that both the Centre and Delhi government have recommended stern actions to curb perennial problem of pollution. “Vehicular emission, construction dust and Construction and Demolition ( C&D) are major challenges before both the governments. While people do not take seriously PUC and few vehicles degrade the environment, the GOI in the affidavit has recommended to link PUC with insurance may impact premium cost of violators,” a senior Delhi government official said on the condition of anonymity.
In the affidavit, it was also stated that government will identify heavy footfall zones in Delhi, will ban the entry of private / commercial vehicle and will induct the e- vehicle in the particular zones to curb vehicular pollution.
“There are various recommendations that have been submitted to the court, induction of E- vehicles, management of construction dust and induced draft zig zag in brick kling to control the source of emission of hazardous gases,” the officer added further.
Recently, in June month of this year, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) asked brick kilns to make shift zig zag after they consider it major source of pollution.
This may be recalled that in order to find a long-term solution of the issue, Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control ) Authority (EPCA) has asked the National Capital Region (NCR) states to work on Graded Response Action Plan to reduce the pollution emanating from different sources.
As per the committee chaired by Bhure Lal , the plan identified brick kilns as major source of air pollution in the region and EPCA ordered all brick kiln to use zigzag technology during the winter.
