Call it a cruel twist of fate. But a 25-year-old native of Nepal, being carted off to Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital for a medical examination, was crushed under the wheels of a JCB backhoe loader when he was trying to flee police custody in West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden.

A police constable was taking him pillion on his motorbike to the dispensary when the man attempted a getaway. Police said Ravi was arrested from Rajouri Garden on September 20 after he had failed to produce a valid ID and state the purpose of his visit to the Capital.

“After his arrest, constable Kuldeep took him to DDU on Saturday for a medical checkup. As they approached the gates and the bike slowed down, Ravi took to his heels. A trailer hit him and he died on the spot,” a senior police officer said, adding that the errant driver, Nafe Singh, has been arrested and his farm trailer impounded.

Ravi was regarded by the locals of Rajouri Garden with suspicion. Residents had complained that he was a known carjacker. He was handed over to the West district police.

Meanwhile, a departmental inquiry has been ordered against constable Kuldeep and assistant sub-inspector Abhinandan who apprehended Ravi. They have been sent to the district line for dereliction of duty.
