In a rare surgery performed recently using minimally invasive technique, Dr Ajay Kaul at BlK Super Speciality Hospital performed a rare heart surgery by using minimum incision of only two inches at the left side of the chest and successfully performed four grafts, which is a rare attempt as only one or two grafts have been done so far.
“Abdulhadi Ahmad Abdo, an Iraqi national, came to us with Coronary Artery Disease having triple vessel malfunction, which required Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting to be done immediately. His condition was critical and angiography done on him suggested that four bypass grafts are required. Abdo was not willing for an open heart surgery and he flew to India only to get minimal invasive surgery as it was ruled out in his own country,” said Dr Kaul, who is also the chairman of Cardiology Department at the hospital.
Dr Kaul further added that so far usually one or two grafts are done using minimally invasive surgery. “However, we took the challenge and attempted this with a small incision in the left chest. This was a high risk case as chances of heart becoming unstable were high and patient could collapse in such a situation. Expert hands, strict monitoring, modern infrastructure, better implants and surgical instruments available now significantly improve the overall quality of treatment. This helped us in doing four grafts successfully with a small incision through Minimal Access Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (MACS),” he explained.
