As the quality of air in the national Capital is worsening by each passing day, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has directed the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for the implementation of Euro V and Euro VI standards for the vehicles. The move will likely reduce the harmful emission which is produced from the motor vehicles and help to curb the particulate matter level in the air.

Currently, Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) is following the Bharat IV standard; equivalent to Euro IV. The purpose to bring Euro VI standards in the city is to make cars cleaner which mean that lower levels of harmful exhaust emissions.

Ashwani Kumar, Secretary, Environment and Forest told The Pioneer, “Vehicular emission is the most important factor for the abnormal rise of particulate matter (PM) 2.5. Pollutant in the air has crossed the par; it is high time to take necessary action. We have sought the Central Government’s help for the implementation of Euro V and VI norms for the vehicles which will run on the city roads.”

According to the data released by Traffic and Transport Division, Delhi Government, 84,75,371 private vehicles, 3,56,821 commercial vehicles are are registered in the national Capital.

“The pollutants, namely Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) can be reduced by upgrading the vehicles standards... And this can be a long-term solution to improve the condition of air pollution in the city,” said Delhi Government official.
