We often hear that police takes bribe in order to help a party to win a case in court, but in one such incident, a businessman was arrested under Prevention of Corruption Act for trying to bribe a Sub-Inspector of Rs 20,000 so that he could favour him in an ongoing case.

Sub-Inspector Sushil Kumar is posted in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Unit of the Delhi Police at Mandir Marg. On Thursday afternoon, when Kumar was working in his office, businessman Satender Singh Chhabra, who is widely known in the business circle, came to him as he was investigating a cheating case in which Chhabra’s father was the complainant.

“Satendra Singh Chhabra came to my office in Old Heritage building in Mandir Marg police station and asked about the progress of his case as an application for cancellation of bail of the accused was fixed before the High Court. I am investigating a case where Chhabra’s father Raghbir Singh is a complainant. I apprised him about the progress of the case and then requested him to wait at the visitor’s wall for

further queries,” alleged SI Kumar.

But Chhabra refused to get up and tried talking more to Kumar about the case. Chhabra got up from his seat and left while another party came to Kumar to know about another case.

“When I finished my work and took a break around 4.30 pm, I checked my whatsapp messages and I received a message from Chhabra where he said that he had kept an envelope under my table for me. I immediately replied to him asking him about his intentions behind keeping the envelope. I called other police officials and after searching a while, found a Khaki coloured envelope with ‘Chhbra’s’ and ‘1 KG Marg’ printed on top. On opening the envelope, we found 10 notes of Rs 2,000 inside,” said Kumar.

Chhabra was immediately called to the police station again for questioning where he admitted to have kept the envelope containing money under the table of Kumar so that he could induce him to show favour to his father Raghbir Singh in his case, said a senior police official adding,” this means illegal gratification and  Chhabra was arrested under section 8 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act by the EOW,”
