Body of a 20-year-old Jamia Millia Islamia student, with a gunshot injury, was found in his own car parked inside a gated Government colony in South Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday. Family of the deceased, identified as Rizwan Khan, said he was a national level hockey player and had represented Delhi in several competitions.
Romil Baaniya, DCP (South) said that as per the preliminary investigation, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, Khan’s family claimed that they suspect foul play as the body was found in the same colony where his female friend lives.
No suicide note has been found at the spot but the police and the boy’s family both said that Khan had visited the girl’s house on Monday and had left a bag with Rs 2 lakh cash and a mobile phone there. The DCP added it remained unclear what happened between the time he left their house and when his body was found or why he left the bag there in the first place.
The girl, a hockey player herself, is currently representing her university in a national level competition in Bhopal. “He left our home in Tihar village around noon on Monday. As he did not return till late evening, we dialed his two phone numbers. One was found switched off while the other was answered by Garima’s cousin. She said that the bag with the phone and money was with them, claiming first that they found it somewhere and then that he himself left it there,” said brother of victim.
According to him despite repeated requests over several calls to the cousin or the girl’s father, the address was not shared by them till Tuesday morning. Her family later told the police that they avoided sharing the address initially because they were not convinced that the person on the other end was speaking from Khan’s family.
“On Tuesday morning we received a call from the girl who told us that the bag was left by my son at her house in Sarojini Nagar. Her father too called around 7-15 am and told us to come and collect the bag from there, sharing the address this time. I and my younger brother Nawab reached there. As I went up to their house, Nawab noticed that Rizwan’s car was there,” said Shareef Khan, the father of the deceased. SR
When Nawab checked his nephew’s car, he found the lock open and Khan sitting on the driver’s seat with a bullet wound on his temple. He raised an alarm and Shareef Khan came rushing.
“ I called the police who reached there and rushed the body for post mortem. We suspect he was killed and then the body was kept in the car afterwards as there was no bloodmark,” said Shareef Khan, an MTNl employee.
Baaniya, however, said the country made firearm with which he was shot was found in Khan’s hand and that there were blood stains inside.
“We are yet to establish why he shot himself. It has also come to our notice that he regularly visited the girl’s house and everyone knew him there. For now we don’t know what happened there on Monday but apparently he was angry after not finding her there,” said another police officer.
