BSES to develop 1st Behavioural Energy Efficiency programme

Published on:

Power major BSES Rajdhani Power limited (BRPl) is all set to develop India’s first ‘Behavioural Energy Efficiency’ (BEE) programme. The objective of the programme is to bring about verifiable energy savings at scale.

Under the initiative, Oracle America Inc will carry out the pilot project covering two lakh customers in South and West Delhi using Oracle Utilities’ O’power customer engagement software to addresses the issue of its growing demand and need of reliable supply, utilities  seeking solutions that will reduce the need to build costly new generation, transmission and distribution facilities.

The development of BEE programme will demonstrate the ability to use software to empower consumers to reduce energy waste, improve energy efficiency, and lower peak-hour consumption in India, a senior BSES official said.

The official also said using the proprietary software, Oracle O’ power will research and study individual lifestyle and energy consumption habits. “They will provide insights on how energy is used at homes and will generate customised reports. Based on it, they will generate individual reports for each of the two lakh customers on how to create energy efficiency actions and corresponding savings,” he said.

Based on results in comparable markets, ‘Home Energy Reports’ (HERs) have the potential to save one to two per cent in peak power demand once the programme is rolled-out across the discom, he added.

US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has approved a huge grant ($ 1,021, 896) for this purpose. Oracle Utilities’ O’power BEE programmes have been successfully deployed at over 100 utilities around the world and have cumulatively saved over seventeen terawatt-hours of energy, the official said.

BRPl spokesperson said, “We want to thank USTDA and Oracle America Inc for partnering BRPl for promoting sustainable technologies. “Besides being a game changer, we are sure that this innovative software will be a win-win both for the discom and the consumers,” he said.

He further said that wide spread adoption of such Demand Side Management (DSM) technologies can go a long way in reducing the demand-supply gap and reduce the need (to an extent) to buy / generate expensive power”

Henry Steingass, USTDA’s Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia said, “USTDA is proud to support India’s first BEE programme, which will utilise innovative US software to meet BRPl’s growing energy needs through energy-efficient practices,” he added.

BRPl and BYPl are premier power distribution companies and Joint Ventures between Reliance Infrastructure limited and GoNCT.
