Bridegroom shot in celebratory firing during East Delhi barat

In a suspected case of celebratory firing gone wrong, a 21-year-old man set to get married was killed in East Delhi's Seemapuri area on Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Kumar.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said, “We received a call around 8 pm about a firing incident in the Kalandar Colony. On reaching the spot, the injured was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. We have identified the accused. Efforts are being made to nab him at the earliest,”

A senior officer said, “The incident took place around 8 pm when Deepak, the bridegroom, after a few ceremonies at his residence in the JJ Cluster area, hopped on to a mare for the barat to move to Faridabad. As the celebration began, one of the guests, identified later as Aadil, known to the victim's sister, pulled out a pistol and fired a shot in the air.

“The bullet, however, hit Deepak who suddenly fell of the mare, bleeding profusely. He was rushed to a Guru Teg Bahadur hospital and police were informed. It was around 2 am that Deepak succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His family was informed and the body was sent for a post mortem,” added the senior police officer.

DCP Shahadra, Nupur Prasad said that the accused has been identified and he is absconding. “Efforts to trace and arrest him are underway. A case of murder and under other relevant sections has been registered and the matter is being probed,” she said.

Deepak worked as a conductor in a bus and lived with his parents while his elder sister lived nearby.

Police sources suspect that the firing could not have been accidental and rather, an outcome of personal enmity as the sister of Deepak was living with another man from a different community. For the past four years, Deepak's sister was living with Deepak and her parents after a tiff with her lover, who is a renowned criminal. To avenge her return to her house, that criminal opened fire at Deepak.”
