A 73-year-old brain-dead patient gave a fresh lease of life to three patients on Monday at Jaypee Hospital, Noida. Deceased Pawan Kumar, a resident of Kavi Nagar in Ghaziabad, suffered a brain haemorrhage. He was referred from Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad to Jaypee Hospital for the follow-up medical treatment on Sunday night. According to the doctor at Jaypee Hospital, the patient was brought in a severe condition and died during the course of treatment.
“The patient did not respond to medical care. He had suffered clotting of blood in head. He was declared brain dead due to haemorrhage,” said Dr Devra.
“It was the decision of the family of the deceased to donate his organs,” said the doctor, adding, “Thereafter we started the follow up procedure for the transplant.”
As very few cadaveric organ transplants are done in the country, therefore doctors are of the view that more people should come forward for such type of organ donations and this can bridge the gap between recipients and donors in the country.
While this is for the first time that a brain-dead patient’s organs have been transplanted to the needy patients at Jaypee Hospital, Dr Amit Devra, Senior Consultant Renal Transplant at the hospital told The Pioneer, “The family’s decision was to donate the organ of the deceased. Today (Monday) we transplanted one of the kidneys to a patient here. The recipient is a 63-year old patient and responding well post surgery... While the other kidney was provided to Fortis Hospital (Noida) as per the recommendation by National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).”
A 16-km-long special corridor was created by Noida traffic police for the transportation of the other kidney from Jaypee Hospital to Fortis Hospital. According to Dinesh Yadav, SP (city) Noida, police established a green corridor between the two hospitals in the afternoon. “We provided an escort vehicle with the ambulance, which was carrying the harvested organ. The ambulance left Jaypee Hospital at 12.07 pm and reached Fortis at 12.24 pm. The 16-km busy route was covered in just 17 minutes,” Yadav said.
Meanwhile, Dr Abhideep Chaudhary at Jaypee Hospital informed that the liver was transplanted to the other patient, who was suffering from liver related complication.
Dr Dushyant Nadar — Additional Director, Fortis Hospital, Noida — who conducted renal transplant to the other patient, said, “The recipient of the kidney retrieved from the deceased donor is a 39-year-old who had been on dialysis since the past two years. The recipient is doing well post transplant.”
